Science Gateways: The Long Road to the Birth of an Institute
Nowadays, research in various disciplines is enhanced via computational methods, cutting-edge technologies and diverse resources including computational infrastructures and instruments. Such infrastructures are often complex and researchers need means to conduct their research in an efficient way without getting distracted with information technology nuances. Science gateways address such demands and offer user interfaces tailored to a specific community. Creators of science gateways face a breadth of topics and manifold challenges, which necessitate close collaboration with the domain specialists but also calling in experts for diverse aspects of a science gateway such as project management, licensing, team composition, sustainability, HPC, visualization, and usability specialists. The Science Gateway Community Institute tackles the challenges around science gateways to support domain specialists and developers via connecting them to diverse experts, offering consultancy as well as providing a software collaborative, which contains ready-to-use science gateway frameworks and science gateway components
Open Science via HUBzero: Exploring Five Science Gateways Supporting and Growing their Open Science Communities
The research landscape applying computational methods has become increasingly interdisciplinary and complex regarding the research computing ecosystem with novel hardware, software, data, and lab instruments. Reproducibility of research results, the usability of tools, and sharing of methods are all crucial for timely collaboration for research and teaching. HUBzero is a widely used science gateway framework designed to support online communities with efficient sharing and publication processes. The paper discusses the growth of communities for the five science gateways nanoHUB, MyGeoHub, QUBEShub & SCORE, CUE4CHNG, and HubICL using the HUBzero Platform to foster open science and tackling education with a diverse set of approaches and target communities. The presented methods and magnitude of the communities elucidate successful means for science gateways for fostering open science and open education
Ultra-fine dark matter structure in the Solar neighbourhood
The direct detection of dark matter on Earth depends crucially on its density
and its velocity distribution on a milliparsec scale. Conventional N-body
simulations are unable to access this scale, making the development of other
approaches necessary. In this paper, we apply the method developed in Fantin et
al. 2008 to a cosmologically-based merger tree, transforming it into a useful
instrument to reproduce and analyse the merger history of a Milky Way-like
system. The aim of the model is to investigate the implications of any
ultra-fine structure for the current and next generation of directional dark
matter detectors. We find that the velocity distribution of a Milky Way-like
Galaxy is almost smooth, due to the overlap of many streams of particles
generated by multiple mergers. Only the merger of a 10^10 Msun analyse can
generate significant features in the ultra-local velocity distribution,
detectable at the resolution attainable by current experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

As such, the loss of a child often represents one of the most traumatic experiences possible. The current research explores how this specific loss relates to one's sense of purpose in life. We further explore whether the loss of a child is particularly detrimental to one's sense of purpose for highly interdependent parents. Analyses of parents from the Midlife in the United States data set revealed, as expected, that the loss of child negatively predicts one's sense of purpose in life, and that this effect is most pronounced for parents high in interdependent self-construal. Potential mechanisms and implications of the present findings are discussed
